Integration of academic disciplines in meaningful units is a priority among ISM faculty members. Currently the elementary grades (PK-5) have at least two interdisciplinary units a year, one per semester. Secondary grade teachers have developed a four-year cycle of interdisciplinary units: - Year one: hydrocarbons and energy
In 2005-2006 the teacher reading list to prepare for the unit on globalization included:: The World is Flat, by Thomas Friedman Illicit by Moisés Naím The No-Nonsense Guide to Globalization by Wayne Ellwood, and The End of Poverty by Jeffrey Sachs. Some essential questions to be answered by students through their study of globalization are: - What is globalization? What is its history?
- What are the costs/benefits of globalization?
- How does it affect Venezuela?
- Is globalization the same as Westernization?
- Is all participation in illicit trafficking wrong? Why or why not?
- How can illicit trafficking best be controlled and reduced?
- Do free markets cause economic growth? Do they help reduce poverty?
- What is a “good global citizen”?
- What is a “good global system”?
