Integration of academic disciplines in meaningful units is a priority among ISM faculty members. Currently the elementary grades (PK-5) have at least two interdisciplinary units a year, one per semester. Secondary grade teachers have developed a four-year cycle of interdisciplinary units

  •  Year one: hydrocarbons and energy
  •  Year two: water
  •  Year three: poverty
  •  Year four: globalization
In 2005-2006 the teacher reading list to prepare for the unit on globalization included::

The World is Flat, by Thomas Friedman
Illicit by Moisés Naím
The No-Nonsense Guide to Globalization by Wayne Ellwood, and The End of Poverty by Jeffrey Sachs.

Some essential questions to be answered by students through their study of globalization are:

  •  What is globalization? What is its history?
  •  What are the costs/benefits of globalization?
  •  Who benefits the most?
  •  How does it affect Venezuela?
  •  Is globalization the same as Westernization?
  •  Is all participation in illicit trafficking wrong? Why or why not?
  •  How can illicit trafficking best be controlled and reduced?
  •  Do free markets cause economic growth? Do they help reduce poverty?
  •  What is a “good global citizen”?
  •  What is a “good global system”?
